Kumaon, the land of myriad tales and tigers as described in Corbett’s anecdotes, is no longer the wilderness it used to be. Still, this part of Uttarakhand brushing the Indo-Nepalese border is a dream getaway for nature enthusiasts. The winding roads run along the oak, pine and deodar trees, terraced paddy fields, an incredible number of old shrines and stone houses as wisps of cloud play in the heavily scented forests of Kumaon. The villages high up in the mountains always have the snow clad peaks of Trishul, Panchchulli, Nandaghunti, Chaukhamba at seemingly close quarters. The culture, cuisine and simplistic lifestyle of the Kumaoni people are also extraordinarily woven in the warps and wefts of time.
A typical Kumaoni thali would comprise some herbs, spices, leafy greens, millets, pulses and vegetables that are unique to the region hence the taste would be found no where else. Nainital, Ranikhet, Almora, Binsar, Kausani, Munsiyari, Pithoragarh, Choukori...there are so many places to experience the grandeur of Kumaon Himalayas.
