The length of a pugdi is generally 9 to 11m but in areas with lower water table, men use longer turban cloth, as long as 20m, so as to use it as a rope to draw water from wells on the way! There are more than 1000 ways to tie a pugdi.
Women also have jewellery, dress and even embroidery coded for each tribe. And the stories are as exciting as ever. The grandeur of Spiti Valley is of superlative degree, but before you pack your bags, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. This dry and cold region is a high altitude cold desert. So pack in full body thermals, moisturizers, good quality hiking boots or snow boots, first aid kit, necessary medicines, dry snacks, good sunscreen lotion, water bottles. And if you are confident enough for Spiti Valley road trip, then keep an emergency kit for your car. Road conditions are good in most places though you need to be alert. The ecosystem of the valley is extremely fragile, so always act responsibly. Ideally your starting point should be from Shimla-Kinnaur side for better acclimatization. And who can ever forget to pack in the camera when your destination is such a picturesque place on earth? With series of barren mountains, clear blue skies, rugged terrain, sparsely dotted with beautiful hamlets and ancient monasteries, here solitude speaks in volumes.
