And there, among the dense pine forests up on ridge, beside the tea gardens, lies this wonderful homestay like a page out of fairytale. The two storied pine wood cottages are comparatively new but the architechture is charmingly old world. Two more A-style wooden cottages decked-up with flower garden also sit close by.
A few moments in solitude, among the dewey hills of Darjeeling could be the perfect mood lifter. The mountains have that aura of magic about them that’s hard to miss.
In the upper reaches of Darjeeling district lies the Gopaldhara and Okayti Tea Estates, producing the best Darjeeling tea favoured even by the royalty. The cooler temperatures at 4500ft coupled with the mists and the playful sunshine create the unique flavour of tea, first flush, second flush, autumn, and aclectic collection of rare flavours. Actually no description of Gopaldhara would be complete without mentioning these details.

There are 4 double rooms in the two storied block and two separate double cottages are also in the same premises overlooking the mountains. The pine wood rooms are tastefully decorated and spacious with attatched private balcony and western style bathroom. You would love to see the amount of attention given to each and every corner of this property while designing the house. One interesting feature is the inter-connected twin rooms on the first floor, ideal for a family of 4 persons.
The rooms have a welcoming look and quite comfortable too. Views from the rooms, terrace and lawns are awesome. The rolling tea gardens Gopaldhara Tea Estate are also visible from the terrace. With little avian species chirping all day long, fog and mists playing hide and seek among lots of conifers down the hills, the serenity and solitude of the place is absolutely addictive.
The kitchen and dining area are located in the ground floor of the main cottage. All meals are served, from breakfast to dinner but one should conveniently place order for certain meals beforehand, that is the essence of a homestay which is far different from a hotel. Food is homemade by the kitchen staff and wholesome. Hospitality of the host family is excellent. The lawns and rooftop sit-out in the first floor are perfect for tea and book lovers and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding pine forests accompanied by the chirping of a lot of birds.
The food is light, delicious, mildly spiced, and mostly locally sourced. Gopaldhara tea is much sought after and you would love your cuppa here at the homestay. The hosts may serve traditional Nepalese platter if you let them know beforhand though other options are also available. .
The tariffs are quite nominal, per guest per day inclusive of all meals, is nothing compared to the enriching experience that Gopaldhara has to offer. Those who would love to spend a day or two near Darjeeling but in a secluded area, this place nestled in the pine forests would be perfect.
