Previously a British private home, the arcitechture, antique furniture, wooden fireplace, carpeted rooms and the warm ambience have won hearts of their long list of recurring guests. The long carpeted hallway is furnished with comfortable wooden sofas and has very good collection of books. You will find vintage photographs adorning the walls, overall this makes it a great place to lounge.
When you enter through the gate, come to the small porch and look at the slanted roof of the entrance, you feel you are entering someone's private house. Well this actually was a colonial house during the British days and still has some of its old aura inside. The owner has been careful of retaining some of the old colonial charm while keeping the atmosphere quite friendly and casual. The feeling is more of a guesthouse than a hotel. The reception area is small and the staff are quite friendly.
Next to the reception a door leads to the long red carpeted hallway which I think is the highlight of the hotel. There are sofas where you can sit, relax and read books. The wooden ceiling, wood framed glass windows on one side and the furniture remind you of the colonial days. You get nice views through the windows at the hallway. Another noteworthy detail is definitely the taxistand just opposite to Alice Villa. So you can drive straight up to the guest house specially if there are senior citizens with walking problems.
The hotel is located at a convenient place and at one corner of the road. The mall is just 2-3 minutes walk through the Bhutia market which sets up on two sides of a narrow alley which goes uphill in front of the hotel all the way to the mall. The fastastic Tibetan and Chinese eateries, bakeries, souvenir and tea shops are all close by.
The hotel has a kitchen dining facility. However you need to order the food in advance, They make Indian and Chinese dishes. The menu is limited but the food is quite okay.
Another highlight is that rooms have fireplaces. They of course charge extra for the charcoal and log woods for lighting the fireplace. There are 17 rooms in the hotel of different types like standard, deluxe, 3 bedded and even duplex rooms. Rooms have attached bath with western toilets and geysers. The old wing of the hotel has wooden rooms and are carpeted.
Rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained and some of room have a fire place too. The food and hospitality are excellent, so are the amenities. The Kanchenjungha is not visible from the rooms but hey, when you have the entire Mall sitting by the guest house, good mountain views and more are not difficult to find.
With faint bakery smells and the perfume of unfurling wildflowers,
Pinecone souls split open and the night overflowed;
Against Darjeeling’s matchbox town, the moon
Lit a flame to the rainwashed range of snow.

How to reach: From the NJP railway station, Siliguri or the Bagdogra airport, there are actually several roads to reach Darjeeling. Hill Cart Road (NH-110) is the main route to Darjeeling from the lower plains, and all other routes eventually meet Hill Cart Road at various points up the hill.
There is an alternative scenic route to go to Mirik from Bagdogra or NJP and then onward to Darjeeling. This route goes through several rolling tea gardens. It's a longer route and takes about 4 hours to reach Darjeeling.
