Sangser Homestay
Starts from 1250
Looking for a quaint sleepy hamlet in the mountains with abounding nature, laid-back village life and magnificent views of Himalayan range including Kanchenjunga peaks? Then ‘Sangser’ will be a perfect getaway for you for a couple of days.
Sangser is only 12kms away from Kalimpong town and located at an altitude of around 4,500 ft in Kalimpong. A narrow winding gravel road bifurcates from the road that leads up to this dreamy village with only few families.
The village was widely known for its cinchona plantations but recently it has swung its doors open to the avid nature lovers who can steal a few wonderful moments of solitude in its picturesque surroundings. This hamlet is nestled along the slopes of the beautiful Delo Hills facing the amazing Kanchenjunga and the Neora Valley National Park with the Teesta River winding away at the foot hills.
Everywhere you look around, it’s only the greenery, plentiful along the slopes that soothes your tired eyes, pure and unadulterated. A good place for bird watching, the hills are vibrant with lots of the flowering species too. Wake up early, atleast for a dawn to witness the sun rising along the Kanchenjunga, it is heavenly indeed.
❝ You need not even listen, just wait…the world will offer itself freely to you, unmasking itself ❞
— Franz Kafka
Details
The homestay …
Walk along the stony pathway lead to the cottages and a Two-storeyed wood finished house. There are actually two newly built beautiful cottages adjacent to each other, the first to be seen as you come down from the road level and approach the homestay.
The Two-storeyed house is great too and located fewer steps ahead of the cottages and having ‘Two Quad room with a common large balcony in 1st floor and One Quad & One Triple room in ground-floor.’ The rooms in upstairs are fully wood paneled.
There is a courtyard in front which is great for having a cup of tea in the morning and bird watching. The lush lawn is surrounded by wonderfully manicured gardens with varieties of flowering plants that are grown by the hosts themselves using organic method in their own horticulture farm.
Rooms —
The rooms are very spacious, clean and simple but artfully decorated, well maintained and have attached European style bathrooms. The rooms are certainly inviting and cozy, with enough natural lights and large windows to offer great vistas of the mountain hills and nature around. The beds are comfortable.
The best part of being there is undoubtedly the warm hospitality and delicious platter, garden grown, fresh and organic. The hosts are very helpful and friendly, always there to keep you most comfortable. They can also help you explore the village, or arrange small treks into the forests. This peaceful and scenic place offers an ideal solace for those who wish to while away time in peace.
Outside the cottages, there is an open veranda where chairs and tables are laid out. You can take your breakfast here while watching the vast farmland and wonderful greenery all around and snow capped mountains forming the backdrop.
Dining - Food & Beverages —
Mrs Rai is an excellent cook herself and she loves cooking. While she (assisted by Mr Rai) prepares all the food, she plans to hire kitchen staff, although she would continue to supervise cooking. The dining area is few steps away from the cottages, however you can also take your breakfast & lunch outdoor and just outside the cottages.
They use a lot of farm veggies in their cooking but they also do non veg meals (chicken, egg, and fish). They make simply delicious Indian and Nepali food, and use optimum level of spices and oil to keep them healthy and tasty.

Reaching Sangser…
Getting there is an uphill task! Just joking!
