Darjeeling Homestay

The most pleasant, homely and enlightening experience in tune with all that you had imagined.

Darjeeling…the word itself evokes beautiful imageries of resplendent hills, heavenly sunsets amidst cloudy mountains, tea gardens, convent kids in their uniforms regularly spilling into the town, conversations in cozy hangouts and cafes along narrow winding lanes…the list can go on and on.

A homestay in Darjeeling is typically an extension of the house of a local. The landlord and his family would stay in one part of the property while there will be separate rooms for guests. Most time the dining room and even the living room would be common so that you can interact with the owner’s family when you stay there.

So a homestay in Darjeeling is all about staying in a local home, experiencing and enjoying Darjeeling using the ways and eyes of the locals. You can dine with the local family, even participate in their day to day life to get insight into their lives and culture, and of course have delicious homemade food in a homely environment. This is an experience which is completely different from a hotel.

Do not expect professional service like of a hotel, instead you will get lots of love and caring from the family. By allowing travellers in their houses, such local families have decided on a different way of living life where they need to spend a lot of time with outsiders as part of their day-to-day life.

❝ With faint bakery smells and the perfume of unfurling wildflowers,
Pinecone souls split open and the night overflowed;
Against Darjeeling’s matchbox town, the moon
Lit a flame to the rainwashed range of snow ❞

A perfect getaway in Darjeeling

This is a small cozy homestay owned by Mr. & Mrs. Pradhan, a retired couple and natives of Darjeeling. Under their care and hospitality your stay can be the most pleasant, homely and enlightening experience in tune with all that you had imagined. Searching for a suitable accomodation or hotels in Darjeeling can be quiet tricky. Darjeeling Homestay can be your perfect getaway in this very famous and sometimes crowded tourist town.

The homely and commendable accommodations will ensure that your trip to Darjeeling is nothing short of ‘a home away from home’ experience.

There are three guest rooms each having access to a bathroom. rooms are nice, clean and cozy. The one upstairs has a triangular slanted ceiling and completely wood paneled giving a great cozy feel. The view of the surrounding mountains and the valley from the upstairs room is also outstanding. All rooms are nice and well equipped with TV, double comfortable beds, almirah or cupboards etc.

Every room has a story…

The Living Room –
Bright and sunny this room can give you a warm and cozy feel, even in the rainiest monsoon or the snowy winters. This room brings flashbacks of warm welcomes and teary goodbyes, of laughter and love, of time spent with family and close friends, of days and nights spent on preparing for exams, of the milkmaid. Oh I can go on and on.

The Guestroom –
This cozy little pink room is always reminds me of my wedding. This was the place where I unpacked my wedding gifts for an entire day – says Mr. Pradhan.

The Master Bedroom –
Well-lit and looking outward towards the surrounding hills, this room is for the philosopher you. You can admire the scenic beauty of the hills, the rolling clouds, the sunset, and the lights of Darjeeling by night from right inside your room.

The Attic/Loft –
A perfect place to snuggle in with a book and a cup of tea, the loft was made especially for my little sister Alka. I’m sure that in some imaginary parallel world of her own, Alkus (as the family lovingly calls her) would have imagined herself to be Rapunzel in her secret – tower…Mr. Pradhan in remembrance of his childhood.

When the lazy holidays and chilled breeze make you even more lazy…

Usually meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner) will come from the host’s kitchen which means that it will be fresh and as if you were having it in your own house. You are most welcome to join them in the kitchen and learn local cuisines. Besides you also always have the option of breaking bread with your host anytime.

They will be more than happy to share recipies or teach you some local/Indian dishes. Most of the guests have enjoyed cooking with…more often than not, they end up preparing momos together. If the chef in you has not been evoked yet you can just ‘hang out’ in the kitchen and appreciate the aroma of brewing tea when that comes with Momos (homemade Tibetan dumplings with hot sauce), it’s out of the world.

Owing to Pandemic, the host family is not arranging for meals. However, there is a fully furnished kitchen which the guests can use at their convenience. There is a grocery store in the ground floor of the same building should the guests want to shop.

Open terrace with a glimmering view

They have a common hall or a living room where guests and hosts sit in the evenings and chat. It’s a nice carpeted room with cushioned seats.
