Chisang Retreat

For some, romancing the mountains is the most rewarding engagement when you are actually neck deep into oh-not-so-rewarding engagements. Sometimes, we even forget to appreciate the stunning beauty of nature still thriving at some place quite close by.

Since ages, the emerald green hills of Kalimpong have sheltered a plethora of exquisite flora and fauna along it’s steep slopes and valleys in between. Cool, crisp summers, frosty-snowy winters and the rich cultural tapestry of the place make it a stupendous combination for an indulging holiday.

Details

Follow the sun, the moon and the mood, and you’ll never be lost, for sure...

Close to the Bhutan border, lies a tiny, apparently sleepy hamlet near Todey in Kalimpong district ‘Chisang’… sounds familiar? Not yet? Off the beaten track, the breathtaking serenity of Chisang would surprise you even more. Home to a community with a wonderful and inspiring ethnicity thriving parallelly a host of exquisite flora and fauna (including some extremely rare as well as endangered), Chisang is yet to lay bare all its treasures.

However cliche it might sound, Chisang really is a bird watchers’ paradise.
Blue throated barbets, red headed trogons, thrushes, babblers… their sweets notes and bright plumage together make an unforgettable treat for the senses.

The Retreat…

The ‘Chisang Retreat’ is a pretty homestay managed by a humble Nepali family and presently the only accommodation in the area. They grow a variety of vegetables in the property including cardamom, the cash crop in that region. A variety of fruit trees also dot the area and are ladened with fruits in the winter months. There are a total of five comfortable rooms with three rooms having attached bathrooms. A Nepali hut is newly constructed which is perfect for couples. All the rooms are clean and well maintained. The highlight of the homestay is the rooftop space that is tastefully decorated and overlooks the slopes of Bhutan. It has everything that can keep guests happy for days, starting from mesmeric views to books, a couple of musical instruments and bonfire arrangement.

A cool, laid back ambiance, jovial hosts, great food, clean and spacious rooms and some interesting nooks and corners around the cottages make ‘Chisang Retreat’ truly an amazing accommodation.

Little more…

The earth laughs in flowers…

The vast stretches of cardamom plantation or the meandering Dawai khola, the beautiful Bhutan hills just a few km away, or the lush green vegetation ...views from the cottages are something like a fairytale.

A hoard of outdoor activities can be planned from here. You can go trekking, hiking, photographing, birdwatching, picnic on the river side. Jaldhaka, Jhalong, Bindu, Paren, Dalgaon, Todey Tangta, Samsing, Suntaleykhola, Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary etc can be explored easily from here. A great place to unwind!

The gorgeous sunrise

The rooftop space at The Chisang Retreat is the ideal place to sink in the breathtaking sunrise view. Watching the sun getting ready to paint the sky with shades of orange and yellow has a unique way of making connections. The process is unfolding before your eyes and you think of using your photography skills. As the light stretches further, the sky transforms itself into a neon blue bed with fluffy clouds floating here and there. The verdant slopes of Bhutan sparkles at a distance and fills your senses with the calmness that you are longing for.

Getting here —

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport. From Bagdogra you can reserved pre-paid taxi from the pre-paid taxi counter located at the arrival area.

By Train: The nearest rail-head is New Mal Junction (i.e. Malbazar). There are very few trains like Kanchankanya Express that leaves daily from Kolkata and can directly reach you to Duars from other places in India. You can get off at New Mal Junction. From here Chisang is 59 kms and takes 2 hrs by car. Shared vehicles are available from Malbazar stand at 130 (updated Dec,2019). One can reach Malbazar in toto vehicle from New Mal Junction, a kilometre away.

But if you can’t find a train directly to a location in Duars, your next best option (which is taken by majority of the tourists coming from all over India) is NJP (i.e. New Jalpaiguri). NJP is a major railway hub and many trains pass through this station.

If you need a cab pickup/drop from Bagdogra Airport/ New Jalpaiguri/ New Mal junction, and for local trips, let us know. We’ll connect with reliable local vendors who you can pay the fares directly to.
