Kalimpong Colonial Cottage

Kalimpong, Bengal1100

A colonial cottage, within the walking distance from the centre of the Kalimpong town albeit bereft of any chaos and cacophony

Something truly intriguing about the Kalimpong hills and the cool crisp breeze is that it helps you forget all the tensions and pretensions that weigh down the urban soul. The town itself has a long colonial history which adds to its charm, though bit more congested in recent times. Surprisingly, the ‘The Colonial Cottage’ is an amazing departure. Tucked away from the Main Street, this hidden treasure is so near to the jostling town yet so peacefully isolated that you will lose count of time as you step in. And the best part is the grand view of the mountains and the silvery Teesta river winding away around the valley beneath.

A charming converted three–room gazebo in…facing the Valley, high, wooden ceilings, huge windows, old fashioned furniture, red cement floor bear testimony to the bygone era have an old world charm around them. One cottage is hexagonal and the views it offers are something to cherish.

The cottages are nestled among a beautiful nursery and a garden teeming with a wide array of flowers — you can spend the entire day and not feel bored at all. Gazebo effect, huh! The hosts, ever smiling, and very helpful, stay a few feet away in an old bungalow. Here food is home-cooked and delicious and tea is very refreshing. Their hospitality is something one would never forget and yearn for coming back again and again, literally.

Stay with a happy family…

The property has three rooms for its guests which is a separate unit set few steps away from the owner residence. The rooms are adequately big to accommodate two adults. Fittings and furnishings are basic. The valley view room is best one you can get the uninterrupted view of the river winding between the hills and an open expanse of sky. The hexagonal cottage and the views it offers are something to cherish.

The rooms have old styled wooden ceilings and red cement floors which add to the charm and quaintness of the property. You love the old world charm of the wooden doors and tables, shelves, decor of the dining room in host residence.

Baths/toilets are attached–two ‘Western’, one ‘Indian‘ are clean but haven’t been updated till now. Hot water is available from a tap at your doorstep.

Certainly the owners have a laid-back approach when it comes to tariffs, like the bygone era. 1100/- per guest per day comes as a huge surprise. Really, one can't ask for more.☺
